you could get Avast antivirus home edition for a free and good antivirus. im not sure about the registry cleaners though.. hope this helps.

Do I really need to use one at all? I am real paranoid about my computer, just wondering if any computer wizards out here actually use these things.

Also, I know there is a file i can go to forgot the name, where i can clean the registry myself what is this called? Not sure how to go about doing it really either.
im not having any computer problems atm. I honestly think windows needs to have a program to do this , besides that hard to use registry editor thing. It is getting ridiculous all the things that need to be paid for just to keep windows running smooth. I wander why they don’t think about this kind of annoyances.
ok microsoft support says never to use registry cleaners. So I guess I have my answer.

Well I trust Microsoft as far as I can throw them.

I do use CCleaner like the other guy mentioned and it takes all of the dead end registry items from deleted programs out of the file so that it doesn’t look for them on startup.

Never had a problem with it at all.

I use ccleaner, have been using it a long time with no problems.

I have tried running both Mcafee and Malwarebytes in and out of safemode, but the computer freezes when it gets to a wlanhlp file. I have plenty of memory and have defraged the hard drive. I have run quick scans using mcafee, malwarebytes, hitman pro, spybot, and have used registry cleaners such as Errorfix and Tune Up Utilities with no indication of malware – it is only during full scans that the system locks. The file that locks it up is in the wlansvc_31bf3856ad…..wlanhlp group. I am running Vista. Can I remove the offending file? If so, how?

I would not remove anything that you are not sure of. Instead, go to http://bleepingcomputer.com and register. Then run a hijack this log and let one of the people there take a look at your log and they will put you in the right direction.

how does "Avira Antivir personal" and "Eusing free registry cleaner" relate to other software out there?

Ccleaner is pretty good in cleaning your registry.
Avira is at the moment the best free anti-virus but it has slow updates and an annoying nag screen offering you to buy the pro-version.
AVG is the most popular free antivirus, i really don’t know why because it hasn’t important features like E-mail protection, active shields, or rootkit(!) protection.
Avast free antivirus sits right in the middle here (if we talk about detection rates), It has all the features you want from a antivirus (the only difference with the paid one is the on-line support!) it’s updates are silently and fast and has an advanced anti-rootkit scan before windows start up(prevents malicious programs from installing at start up)
