Computer Security Registry Liberation

I have a Gateway FX P-6831, which isnt exactly the newest laptop. I got it used, and it worked fine, but in the last 5 months, or so, it has been freezing randomly (solid grey and blue screens). I dont do anything hardcore on it, mostly just internet and other light programs. I consistently run registry and disk cleaners on it (Advanced Systemcare 4 and CCleaner), as well as virus scans (Microsoft security essentials). On the other hand, my hard drive (around 220gb) has only 15gb free. Is that what is causing this problem? Should i erase my entire hard drive and reinstall windows? Or is there any other (less drastic) solution? I know that it isnt the newest computer, but it works fine other than the random freezes (happens about 1-2 times a day), so i would like to try to fix them. I had recently installed a new battery (OEM) so its not that, and they are not caused by the AC adapter being plugged in either. Your help would be greatly appreciated!

This could very well be heat-related. Try blowing hard into the laptop’s heat exhaust vent or spraying it with an air duster to clear it out, and that may fix your problem.

As others have mentioned though, these kinds of problems can be caused by almost anything in an older laptop. The problem probably isn’t your hard drive, as that would be making clicking noises and/or long freezes while you’re working on the system, though I can’t discount it completely. It could be the motherboard, possibly the solder joints beginning to weaken from the chipset or CPU. It could be your RAM beginning to fail, which could be diagnosed with Memtest86, just google it.

So many possibilities that there’s no good way to tell you what to do from here without seeing it. If you run out of ideas and want to find someone who will take a look at your laptop inexpensively, check Craigslist.

Hi guys,

So I have been having internet fluctuating issues of late, and this is becoming a serious problem, especially as a gamer.

Issue: At random points in time, I will see my ping shoot up (I usually use Teamspeak 3 to monitor my ping) to unbelievable amounts that makes gaming unbearable. I run usually at 54-53ms +- 0.8-4.0. At some random points in time, my ping will spike up to 100′s and a 50 flex and then peak at a 400 and 300 flex. This will occur for a time between 5 minutes to 30 minutes. It happens around 4 or 5 times per day, and I happen to be on a lot.

Here is my current specs:

I am running off a wireless connection from across the house.
Devices: my PC, Sony Vaio Laptop, 6 year old PC (Hardlined), Xbox360 (Hardlined), iTouch, DroidX, and a Toshiba Laptop. Normally only my PC is connected, with the 6 year old PC and the Xbox360 connected at random times. No heavy internet usage from that PC besides the occasional porn streaming (gotta love roomates) and xbox360 only does netflix.

I run 2 registry cleaners (CCleaner and RegCleanPro), and keep my drivers updated to a normal basis. I clear my cookies on a constant basis.

Solutions Approached:
1. Called out Comcast, got them to adjust a double flow internet booster that was power cycling my modem.
2. Updated Router firmware to latest version.
3. Virus scanned PC using AVG
4. Preformed 30/30/30 restart onto the Router to restore it to factory settings, which actually fixed an old xbox360 issue in which it hogged our bandwith to the point if anyone tried to access the net when Live/Netflix was running the net crashed.

If you guys need any more information let me know, I think this is a PC error rather then a ISP error, since comcast has helped me a bunch and fixed a majority of their issues. I did a quick internet crash logger, this only documents my crashes, not my spikes though. They are usually much more frequent.

3:00 am – 4/6/2012 crash, went to sleep
12:15 pm – 4/6/2012 crash, went to class
3:56 pm – 4/6/2012 crash, went to shower
12:00 am – 4/7/2012 crash, went to reset
Reset Modem at 12:01 am 4/7/2012, turned everything off
Net access back up at 12:06 am 4/7/2012, did not fix issue.
12:08 am -4/7/2012 internet crashed, went to sleep.

Either your anti-virus is compromising your computer speed and efficiency of your NIC, or the problem is due to someone on your network downloading/streaming/uploading stuff. Since it happens at random and for various lengths of time, I am inclined to bet that it is someone else on your network hogging your bandwidth.

If all other devices are off, then I would disable or uninstall any anti-virus you have. Do any other devices on your network have the same problem?

My copy of Windows 7 Ultimate crashed a while ago, and after numerous times of using the "Repair Tool", it didn’t fix any of my problems (Different blue screen messages that came right after the Windows logo, some about hardware, others about software, and others about the BIOS.) I do believe that a corrupted Registry key was the cause, perhaps after utilizing one of my registry cleaners such as CCleaner.

Anywho, I am in the process of reinstalling my drivers. After I did the install, most of the things I value such as my Music, Pictures, Videos, etc were taken into the "Windows.old" folder. This is the first time that I’ve had to do this, so how do I get all of my media back where it was before I had to do the install?

There are six folders in the "Windows.old" Folder:

- Perflogs
- Program Files
- Program Files (x86)
- ProgramData *Hidden*
- Users (Where most of my Media is)
- Windows

Can I simply just move the "Windows" folder back to it’s previous location on my C: Drive, and would it be possible to install all of my deleted programs such as Microsoft Office Word 2010, Avast Internet Security, etc? And, once I have reinstalled the programs, will my data on them be preserved from the "Windows", "Program Files", and "Program Files (x86)" folders?

Any help you could provide would be most appreciative!

You can drag & Drop your user data folders from .old into your new user folder for your music, documents, etc. To keep the program data from past installs I would install the programs first, then overwrite everything besides the .DLL & .EXEs when it asks. Sometimes the data will be present in the Documents folder, sometimes it may be in ProgramData. Just overwrite it all.

Another thing, Just incase. If you use firefox I would recommend FF Sync, it will sync everything across computers so its less fumbling in-case of emergency & maybe a service like dropbox for important data.

The registry is the place where your computer stores the configuration information about your computer and your installed programs so that your operating system can use them.

Maintaining the registry is an important step in keeping your computer healthy. Registry problems can include slow performance, computer crashing, and the annoyingh Microsoft Windows error messages.

If any of these describes you as a computer user:

- Has old drivers on their system that have not been removed.

- Installs or uninstalls software very often.

- Have third party programs running such as Spyware and Adware (you can’t stop these from being installed)

- Remove software by deleting them from the Program Files folder.

- Installs or Uninstalls hardware.

Then you absolutely need to be repairing your Microsoft Windows registry regularly! All of the above leave traces in your registry that will only hurt your computer in the long run. If you don’t clean your computer to fix your registry than you are going to be in a whole world of trouble.

Make sure that you backup your registry before you try to clean or fix anything. Most registry cleaners have registry backup automatically for you, but be sure to check them out. Remember, don’t try to edit anything in the registry yourself unless you are very computer savvy.

Why do you need a registry cleaner? Registry cleaners are important because it protects your PC from harmful processes. Is your computer slowing down for no apparent reason? Are you having errors that are not solved by your anti-virus or anti-spyware program? Your PC might be affected by applications that are running without your knowledge. Registry cleaners are a must! Registry cleaners ensure that your registry is clean.

Some errors are just a quick registry fix, while others could be more problematic.

If you keep your registry clean, free of viruses and spyware your computer will last much longer. Spend the time or money now for a registry cleaner to save you even more time or money later down the road.

If you are short on cash then there is a free registry cleaner available that I use exclusively. The program is called Error Nuker and it is a free ware registry cleaner. Error Nuker works on Windows XP, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT4, and Windows 2000. Microsoft Windows does NOT come with a registry cleaner.
